Wood Privacy

Single gates typically run $500 to $900 installed. A 1 ft lattice topper adds roughly $8 to $18 per linear foot. Horizontal board orientation adds $5 to $12 per linear foot over vertical due to extra framing.

The rules before you build

Height limits

Backyard fences up to about 2 m generally do not need a permit. Taller fences require an exemption. Front yard fences are capped much lower, and corner lots have sight triangle limits.

Pool enclosures

Toronto requires pool enclosures of at least 1.5 m with self-closing, self-latching gates. Pool fencing runs 10 to 20 percent more than standard.

Shared fences

Boundary fences can be cost-shared with your neighbour under Ontario's Line Fences Act, often 50/50 by agreement. We quote it both ways so the conversation is easy.

Fence FAQ

Why do posts matter so much?
Toronto sits on heavy clay with a frost depth around 4 feet. Posts set shallow or in dry-packed gravel heave with every freeze-thaw cycle, and the whole fence leans within a few seasons. We dig to proper depth and set posts in concrete, every post, every job.
Can my neighbour and I split the cost?
Yes. Fences on the property line can be cost-shared by agreement, commonly 50/50 under the Line Fences Act. If the line itself is unclear, a survey may be worth it before building, since moving a fence later costs far more.
Do I need to call before digging?
We do it for you. Ontario One Call utility locates are mandatory before any digging, and they are part of our standard process on every fence job.
How long will a wood fence last?
A well built pressure treated fence lasts 15 to 20 years, cedar longer, with staining or sealing every 2 to 3 years. Vinyl lasts 20 to 30 years with essentially no maintenance if you spec cold-rated product.
